John Roberts orchestrated Bush vs Gore in 2000 which denied an accurate counting of the election (which Gore would have won). For this he was awarded the Justice seat on SCOTUS.

That combined with the Citizens United ruling as well as everything since, is what allowed the orange monster to exist
