i will die on the hill that the original Nazis were just as silly as our modern versions. Hitler based his plans for the invasion of Russia partly on cowboy novels written by a con-man.
Sorry for this random question Robert, I do listen to BTB & if I missed it, I apologize, but what seemingly enabled the Germans to be like “holy shit we fucked up” after WW2 yet a decent portion of Americans are still not convinced that losing the Civil War was a good thing?

Germany had a period of de-nazification. War crimes tribunals, forcing Germans to confront the camps, etc.
In the USA, the insurrectionists were mostly let back in charge within a few decades, especially after Reconstruction was abandoned.

Having the combined forces of the Allies beating their heads in was a factor. The Civil War was a family dispute (over who is acknowledged as family, no less); family fights are hard to end, period, even if they go dormant for decades.
