🚩Old Alberta coal mines are polluting rivers and endangering wildlife, says a new study by government scientists.
The study is "a warning flag" for future coal projects in the province, says a former Alberta government scientist in charge of environmental monitoring.

Samples were taken from rivers near 3 coal mines near Hinton that closed in the early 2000s.
They found rivers downstream had high concentrations of pollutants. Luscar Creek and Gregg River, for example, had nickel ratios 200x higher downstream than in water upstream.
It’s up to the Alberta Energy Regulator to decide if more monitoring or actions are needed in the bodies of water referenced in the study.
