In a real democracy your vote is secret and electoral boundaries are based on population, not party alignments. In an authoritarian regime your vote is of no consequence, just like in the U.S.

The seed of gerrymandering - listing your political party affiliation when you register to vote. Someone with access to your registration, which also includes where you live, can redraw the electoral boundaries to benefit one party over all others.
