It would be nothing, like NOTHING, for a handful of lefty donors to fund a pipeline for truly leftist media that could rival the fascist apparatus and give hundreds of fact-oriented journalists jobs and set up dozens, maybe hundreds, of local news outfits, fully staffed, for 5+ years or more
I mean we're talking about a combined nationwide investment of less than, idk, $50 million. But indie and nonprofit media are fighting amongst ourselves for grant-scraps and begging for subscribers.
NRO? Federalist? Their ilk? Are set and are paying their staff six-figures-plus for years to come.

You might want to add a zero or two to that $50 million, if you’re talking seriously.

Also think tanks. The Left has invested in NGOs focused on services. The Right has focused on think tanks and lobbying groups that are intertwined with Right-wing media.

Thanks for this.

I have posted maybe 20 times now that I think a group of rich Dems should fund a national online newspaper/podcast operation.

The simple reason why is because they know truly independent left media will bite the hands that feed it

The right is mostly about exploiting things for profit. The left is mostly about defending things from abuse.
Exploiting things makes money. Defending things costs money.
This is why there will always be more right-wing media than left-wing media.

It's easy for right-wing donors to invest in fascist media because they know they'll get what they pay for; we have to be real that left-wing donors DON'T invest in left-wing media because they're afraid they'll get a wild card that doesn't shore up their fundamentally pro-capitalist nonsense.

I bet one could find 50,000 well off people to put up 1k each, with the right marketing and leadership.

If there's a source for that $50M, though, why isn't that money already in the works? I 100% agree that local fact-based media (not "the left Joe Rogan") is the north star here, but I'm unconvinced getting it isn't harder than you're suggesting here. It's definitely the #1 problem to solve, though.
