Putting aside the fact that Erie Canal was in no way built to “compete with Chicago,” is he just pulling names out of a hat? New Yorkers have no beef with Chicago, and he’s too much of an idiot to realize that to really stir some shit, Philly and Boston are RIGHT THERE.
The Erie Canal began construction in 1817, Illinois was not admitted to the Union until 1818. The Erie Canal was completed in 1825, Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837. I am not a historian these are just readily available facts you can Google
