Google will block sideloading of unverified Android apps starting next year
Google says it’s no different than checking IDs at the airport.
Google says it’s no different than checking IDs at the airport.
I knew that this day was going to come. Next thing Google is going to do is kill AOSP.
Putting up more walls on their walled garden because they want to be "Just Like Apple"™️
Enshittification strikes again.
Why does this look like it's really about creaming money from apps in the same way Apple does?
I didn't buy a phone to have a gatekeeper define what I can and cannot compute.
This is not like them "checkin ids at the airport" this is like them checking ids at the entry to my fucking house. It's my phone, stop acting like you own my phone. I can check ids to get into my god damn house you control freaks.
fuck the warranty im unlocking ny bootloader
Google continues the war against its own users.
I think we should treat this more like "False Arrest". If you stop me from installing /my/ software on /my/ device, you are guilty of false arrest. You have arrested me from using my own property. I think you (Google) should then be punished accordingly.
Who owns the airport, Google?
I can't decide who is more abusive to their poweruser userbase: Google w/ Android or Mozilla w/ Firefox
A personal phone that I paid for requires as much security as an airport now? Did AI write that talking point for them?
Google has no idea what they're talking about. It's my fucking phone. I paid for it, it's my property and in my hands and I don't let other people access it.
No.
It's more like Ford deciding who can ride in a customer's Mustang.
LineageOS, PostmarketOS, GrapheneOS... all continue to be the superior choice clearly.
TSA in my home, lovely...
How will this work for developers? Are they gonna do what Apple does, where developers can certify specific devices as "I can load onto this one"?
Ok so.. what are devs supposed to do? O wait let me guess… gonna have to start paying to get verified right?
I assume, per the article, that this doesn't apply to non-Google Android variants like GrapheneOS, LineageOS, or /e/OS. It's time to ditch mainline Android for either one of them or a non-Android Linux.
It's about time for a new OS anyway.
When all the big guys stood behind Trump, was the same day I deleted everything I could.
I'd have shitcanned Google a long time ago, but use their Home ecosystem pretty fully.
Home Assistant is working pretty good though.
Hey Google: my phone is not an airport. This is like the cops standing at my house and checking IDs for everyone trying to enter.
I don't want the cops at my door, I don't want you gatekeeping my phone.
They had to use the worst fucking comparison possible because the security theatre at airports has made the experience existentially worse. The presumption that anyone (or in this case) anything without the right "stamp of approval" is automatically dangerous is sick-minded.
And they know that.
Google can kiss my ass starting now.
Big Gs next attempt fighting ad blockers
Fuck you for uncritically adding that idiotic sub-headline. What is wrong with you?
Corporations just cannot help themselves from hurting their customers, doing evil shit, & making everybody's lives worse.
They can sideload my dick. I will root my shit to oblivion and then nuke every bloated fuckapps google pushed in the system. I PAID FOR MY SHIT AND I WILL USE IT HOWEVER I FUCKING PLEASE AND NO BILLION DOLLAR CORPORATION WILL TELL ME WHAT TO DO.
Well that's some shit
I don't have a fucking iPhone because of this shit, are you kidding me????
I hope both sides of their pillows are uncomfortably warm until the end of time
This has been one of the biggest advantages Android has had over iOS. You take that away now, then suddenly it makes it easier to chose iOS when the difference isn't as drastic. No incentives, no need for it. Have fun losing sales, Google.
Looks like they just screwed themselves on the lawsuit with Apple then. I’m not even sure they can legally since its open sourced software they’re using as an app launcher anyways.
I've been wanting to switch to iPhone for a while now, the one thing keeping me on Android is being able to install apps as I decide. I have MacBook and Apple TV.
If Android becomes a walled garden too, I'll have no reason not to switch to iPhone.
So I can't make my own tools for my phone now? :/ I have to download some ad-and-surveillance-ridden app?
Google blocking installation of software on a device you own.
what, they're trying to prevent "phone 9/11"??
"No different from checking IDs at an airport"
I don't think I've ever encountered a more stupid analogy
Security at an airport isn't for protecting the person going through security, it's to protect everyone else
This is meant to protect a person from themself; it's an insult to autonomy
I don't do this anyhow mainly because I spend most of my time fighting using Google's AI.
This is not the airport IT'S MY PHONE
Alrighty, so when will Epic Games sue them?
