Today in Black History: On Aug. 25, 1927, tennis legend Althea Gibson was born in Silver, SC. The daughter of sharecroppers, she rose from Harlem’s courts to win Grand Slams, shatter racial barriers in tennis, and later break ground as the first Black woman on the LPGA tour.

You can't shatter steel. She was a beacon but any black person who excels does so against a backdrop of insecure whites who do everything to ensure they don't achieve high status somewhere in historical books.

AND on top of all that she was, she helped professionalize tennis, so players could be paid and not be the brilliant, broke amusement for rich people to gloat over.
