HPV causes ~5% of all cancers worldwide. The vaccine protects against the strains most likely to cause cancer. That includes:

  • Cervical cancer (virtually all cases are HPV-driven)
  • Anal cancer
  • Oropharyngeal cancer (throat, base of tongue, tonsils)
  • Vulvar & vaginal cancers
  • Penile cancer

  1. The vaccine doesn’t treat existing HPV infections, but it prevents future ones. Best protection comes from vaccinating before sexual debut (age 9–12), but catch-up vaccination up to age 26 and sometimes up to 45 still offers benefit.
