    Quite simple. Birchall is white and works in the UK. Recall that the material scientist who provided the plastic tracheas was sanctioned by UCL. Important distinction, that scientist was not white. HoL doubtless awaits Birchall and UCL governance will be given a medal.

    Also seems a striking example of how the grant race & hyper-selectivity is killing UK science. As the obsession with super-funding 'excellence' & 'global leaders' starves the many to make a select few 'winners' grant-rich, the mega players become 'too big to fail'.
