This paragraph jumped out at me too. I read it several times over.
Evidently creating an economy that was "the envy of the world" was not enough to ensure democrats would stay in power. That's pretty telling about republicans these days and the people who vote for them.

Good framing. If we see the moment for what it is, then it's time to let go of the illusions, and engage with what is real rather than what we wish was real. They will not stop voluntarily.
