We have evidence that Shakespeare was popular while he was a working playwright, but we also have that about Marlowe. I've always wondered whether Shakespeare's enduring appeal is down to the fact that there are no original copies of his plays
Shakespeare was hugely popular and Mozart was famous from childhood. Not sure these are the best examples but the point is true

True, bit hastily thrown together on my part, but I do find it really interesting, the ebbs and flows of these things, and how both long and short term posterity change the way we see the permanence of people.
