I think churches don't need 501(c)3 status to be considered charitable institutions and thus donations to them are tax-deductible even if they aren't a 501(c)3.

Pastors and pew sitters pay income taxes. Churches are organizations and 501c3 exempt. End citizens united, so non human entities pay taxes. Like the NFL and the NRA. Churches and corporations avoid taxes with these shenanigans.
