UBI without price controls/rent control is just a recipe for shoveling money up to the 1%.

Why do you think the tech bros all support it? Because you can’t set a price on innovation.

Does anyone bother to think beyond one chess move anymore?

  1. Just to be clear you believe:

    1. This is actually an original thought;

    2. UBI advocates haven't considered this "argument"

    3. You are persuasive

Maybe find a persuasive person making a strong argument and share their content next time. The irony of having a green latern pic and 0 imagination...

  2. It's just not that simple, Hal. Here's a good read about UBI and rent.

And here's one from me about UBI and inflation in general.

It's important to consider the many variables. Also, I like a land value tax vs rent control.

  3. Frank: What a lovely move. Uhh... Rook to King one. Hal: I'm sorry, Frank. I think you missed it. Queen to Bishop three, Bishop takes Queen, Knight takes Bishop mate. Frank: Uhh... yeh. It looks like you're right. I resign. Hal: Thank you for a very enjoyable game. Frank: Yeah, thank you.

  4. I came across UBI idea years ago. The guy talking about it described it as a panacea and was enthusiastic about it. Looking back, he was the sort of tech guy who would have been into crypto on the early side and looking to climb.

I could never figure out how it would be successful in reality.

  5. I’m still trying to figure out how those that make sure everyone can see the cross around their neck and claim we are a Christian nation can simultaneously say, “Fuck the poor and the sick” and believe that’s what Jesus would want. It’s almost like their religion is all bullshit.

  6. No. It’s been decades since anyone thought long term, past the next quarter’s market report. Because if they can’t show growth and profit each quarter (even with cooking the books) the board will just hire someone else who can.

  7. How so? With UBI you can work a bit extra, save up, and get your own place if you don't like the rent situation or you can choose to move to a less expensive area. It is the fact that we are trapped in these jobs with no financial floor that causes most of this b.s.

  8. If we were living in saner times & the federal government was controlled by progressives with policy ideas to help Americans rent control & UBI legislation would be passed. Tech is gradually replacing human workers, long form discussions need to happen.

  9. We've got rent control in Sweden, and thus got more ppl looking for apartments than ever. Rent control just benefits the ppl already living in the city with heavily subsidised rent (paid by us).

Nothing is worse than dysfunctional bureacrats trying to decide the price of sonething real.

  10. One variable to consider is the cost of living adjustment in various district/counties/states. How to account for this. Rather we talk about minimum wage, UBI, and/or price controls; puchase power and access to essential goods and services is impacted and part of defining these regulations.
