We were taught to fear communism & socialism but Christian Nationalism wasn’t even on the radar. Genius.
To be honest, I think the academic world—made up of people who are largely reasonable and educated—believed that WW2 would basically be enough to tell everyone that militant Nationalism of any kind of a bad idea. They didn't account for people being dumb and tolerating dumbness.

Historians will be running circles around the fact, because it's just too embarrassing, but Fascism took over the U.S. in only 80 years because the phrase, "It's not that deep," took over 2 generations of Americans. We Not That Deep'd ourselves into a dystopian situation.
