When I was a teenager I was scared to drive in DC - compared to Baltimore, it was a huge, intimidating city with confusing roads (esp before GPS), way more traffic etc.

Then I went back recently after 15 years of driving in NYC and LA and realized that it was, in fact, a tiny city for babies.

The circles can be confusing for out of towners, but absolutely nothing compares to driving in NYC. Truly if you can make it here you can make it anywhere.

  1. NYC is an oddly pleasant city to drive in. Around the year 2000 they started putting signs up and marking the streets far better and, it's not a terrible driving town

I used to be the designated driver for many nights out, and the way home always went thru the White Castle drive thru

  2. NYC forces drivers to be hyper alert in a way that doesn’t compare to anyplace else. It’s a combination of very aggressive pedestrians & bikers, scam artists, surprise traffic patterns, road layouts that make no sense, the worst road signs ever, and bus and taxi drivers who just don’t give a shit.

  3. I learned three important life lessons from driving in NYC:

    1. Sometimes you have to make your opportunities.
    2. The next guy doesn't want to dent his car any more than you want to dent yours.
    3. Stay well clear of dented cars.
