Then he's almost assassinated by Sec'y of State Sarason (no VP), the mastermind behind much of the

transformation to what the country has become. He agrees to be exiled to Europe in exchange for being allowed to live.

Sarason takes over, spends most of his time partying, and then he and his cronies are all murdered a few weeks later, in a military coup.

This makes me feel oddly hopeful.
