Spoiler alert: In "It Can't Happen Here," about 18 months in, dictator Windrip has destroyed everything he can destroy, there's not much else to do, he's bored, and he misses his old life.
Then he's almost assassinated by Sec'y of State Sarason (no VP), the mastermind behind much of the

transformation to what the country has become. He agrees to be exiled to Europe in exchange for being allowed to live.
Sarason takes over, spends most of his time partying, and then he and his cronies are all murdered a few weeks later, in a military coup.
This makes me feel oddly hopeful.
