This sounds glib but “prominent people being mocked online and hating it” is suchhh a driver of so many things in media/politics right now!
I think the lettuce thing broke Liz Truss's brain.

I think the lettuce thing broke Liz Truss's brain.
As Naomi Klein put it: “ Narcissism (Grandiosity) + Social media addiction + Midlife crisis ÷ Public shaming = Right-wing meltdown”
But weren’t they told as kids not to react to provocation? Easier said than done I know.
Her nearest and dearest need to sit Mary down and tell her it’s over. She continues to embarrass herself.
Also not prominent people - like most of this lot

What you learn at a gathering of neoreactionaries, Very Online rightwingers and the formerly cancelled
I'm reminded of what Naomi Klein wrote in DOPPELGANGER about Naomi Wolf's fall from grace. It's the ultimate book for our time.
Looks like “disabling the deep state” is simply code for overthrowing the constitution.
“Needless to say I had the last laugh” as a political system
I don't know if there's a word for it, but I can't think of a couple of older leftish journalists who were very online, got wound-up and turned angry and very right-wing. I call it online derangement syndrome. I don't think it would have happened without Twitter.
Too much cheese!
The fact that you can potentially be refused entry to America based up social media content is … quite a thing
Tiny and fragile egos. Amazing how the ones who always cried snowflake are the ones who are most prone to melting down over nothing.
Not just online. There's certainly an argument Obama mocking Trump at the correspondents dinner was one of the early driving forces for him going back into politics directly
It drives most of the stuff about the need for on line controls where politicians often equate “abuse” with mere criticism
Naomi Klein nailed this phenomenon in Doppelgänger, for sure - and how when one door closes (losing legitimacy in the eyes of general non-maniacs) another opens (the readymade grift market for maniacs)
Lettuce state this clearly now....Liz...the Lettuce said the better...
Or in person (eg Trump running for President after being mocked at Obama's White House Correspondents Dinner)
Strikes me that Truss's move to embrace the far-right/nativisim is less ideological and more simply "these are the only people that are willing to listen to me and pay me for speaking opportunities."
Like, the only way for her to receive any attention is to say inflammatory shit. So she does.
A far cry from when politicians would clamour to be mocked by Spitting Image.
I'd add: prominent people being mocked or derided online, AND finding another tribe willing to welcome them". Truss wasn't exactly a nativist populist in power.
Truss really does have a head made of rotting lettuce….
I'm sure there'll be a few of them trotting out the "this means people can't be anonymous online" bollocks soon enough.
Because what they really want is to be able to set their expensive lawyers on anyone who dares call out their nonsense.
She's pathetic.
I’ve just been reading a biography of Kaiser Wilhelm II and it is nothing new. He was furious at the way the British press portrayed him.
Don’t give her air
On bluesky here one should introduce an X screenshot blocker. That would weed out about 99% of that kind of stuff. If I need an X digest there are enough sub-reddits doing nothing else than screenshotting X.
I firmly believe that this and a desire for control and surveillance are why we have age verification and phone bans. If the kids and their pesky parents aren’t online, they can’t speak truth and if they do, we know who they are
