I hope I'm wrong, but my feeling is that this was the plan all along. That Trump is planning to announce as an accomplished fact a deal that concedes all of eastern Ukraine (and Ukrainian sovereignty) to Russia, and dare Ukraine to say no. When they do, he will cut off all aid and lift sanctions.
