A lot of the problem is that the word "socialism" can really mean anything to anyone now. To me, socialism is still what existed in the GDR (Eastern Germany), which really left the country in shambles. But nowadays, people are calling a social market economy (like in Western G.) "socialism" as well.

Socialism is the welfare state and national health service that Britain created after the Second World War. What the GDR and USSR had was communism.
