The expansion was completed in 1936 and included a large reception hall and a conservatory (known as the Festsaal mit Wintergarten in German) in the garden area. Uniquely, the structure built underneath this hall led down to an air-raid shelter, which later became known as the Vorbunker and was connected to the deeper Führerbunker. Later, as part of his plans for the grand "New Reich Chancellery" designed by his favorite architect, Albert Speer, Hitler commissioned an even more impressive ballroom; however, this second, grander project was never finished due to the war. The original ballroom/reception hall at the Old Reich Chancellery was later destroyed during World War II
