STATEMENT FROM THE BISHOP OF NEW YORK, THE RT. REV. MATTHEW HEYD:
"Hallelujah! We rejoice in the release of Yeonsoo Go from ICE detention. Our prayers have been answered-and the hard work, persistence, and love of so many have made a difference.
I am profoundly grateful to everyone who worked for Soo's release over the last five days. In particular, I want to thank the legal team of Diocese of New York Vice-Chancellor Mary Davis and Eugene Nam from El Barrio Angels. Their faithful advocacy made this moment possible.
The Diocese of New York and our partners honored our faith and spoke up for our values. It worked. Today, we celebrate the joyful reunion of Soo with her mother, the Rev. Kyrie Kim.
And yet, our work is not finished. Another of our parishioners, Ketty DeSantos, remains in detention-along with countless others. We continue to call for dignity, compassion, and care to be at the center of our immigration system and our courts.
As people of faith, we are called to be sanctuary. That means showing up, speaking out, and never giving up. There is more work to do."
