This man is being subjected to a real-life version of Kafka’s “The Trial” as punishment for being the embarrassing object of the regime’s own malicious and chaotic incompetence. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/08...

A system that cannot reverse this is a system that must be abolished.

This case needs to always be in the public eye.

I'll be teaching a course on Kafka this winter quarter and we'll be reading The Trial. One of the informal assignments is for students to find recent real-life examples of and references to the kafkaesque in current events and news. The assignment is, unfortunately, easier than it used to be.

The Trump administration brings Hanid Ortiz, a triple murderer, back from Venezuela and frees him in the US while arresting & deporting, often to prisons where they're tortured, people like Kilmar who haven't committed crimes. Stephen Miller is an evil man & we're an awful country for enabling him.

This regime is showing us exactly what it intends to do to anyone who dares dissent: target, detain, and disappear them. Today it’s Kilmar. Tomorrow it’s every one of us who refuses to kneel. If we don’t recognize this as tyranny in real time, we’ll be living in its shadow forever.
