Clinton was as slick, certainly. But he could dust off the accent and he could actually reach people (again, aside policy considerations.) I don't think Newsom could manage even this.
And, honestly, Clinton only won with Perot gumming things up.
Clinton could also plow through a plate of wings while shooting the shit. If Newsome tried that he'd make Mayor Pete's rat meal look like the chill-hangout scene in a Fast and the Furious movie.
