I want you to imagine the outcry there would be if any other country did this to US citizens. Such countries would be classified, appropriately, as authoritarian enemies of free speech and dissent.

They are already doing this.
They already are, but so far it mostly seems to be targeting specific people. I wiped my electronics before coming back through border control but thankfully they hadn't yet gotten to me on the enemies list.
