Did it not go on longer than that? I can remember it being that high and I'm too young to remember the 1950s. When everybody paid their fair share of tax, everybody benefited.
And the rich still managed to invest in art galleries and suchlike. E.G. Lady Lever art gallery next to Lever Brothers factory on Merseyside. Alongside the workers houses which were built and still look lovely today.
Margaret Thatcher received huge applause from the Conservatives when she reduced the highest tax rate to 60%.
If you suggested a 60% higher tax rate today, the Conservatives would insist that you were trying to destroy the economy.
And for anyone who doesn't understand how the tax system works, the wealthiest only pay the highest rate of tax on income over a particular threshold, ie. excessive amounts of income that most would never reach...
It's the rish that is "Unsustainable".

We need to use the 'best brains' that the UK has to rework our taxes in fair and equitable way to fund our Public Services....if that means taxing wealth in some way then it must be looked into. Milton Keynes, Bucks.
