Actually Rothermere withdrew support for the Blackshirts in 1936, finding their violence distasteful. But he remained a huge fan of Adolf Hitler and Mussolini right up until the start of the war.

Meanwhile and indeed well into 1940 his papers led the campaign against Jews & others fleeing Europe.

It was The Mail that essentially led the "Fifth Column scare" which whipped up fear against people ... often young men... who had fled Naziism and it led to thousands being deported or interned..
