I want to live in an alternate universe where Altered Beast was not a Genesis pack-in so it could rot in the obscurity that it deserves

"thunder force ii wouldn't have broad appeal" oh and altered beast does??

I got the “Core” system and did not get a pack-in game but somehow Altered Beast ended up in my collection. I think the neighbor just gave me his.

It really truly only occupies any brain space because it was foisted upon people loool

At least when Nintendo packed in a shitty game, it was to justify the existence of ROB.

Of the launch titles for the Genesis, Altered Beast is a justifiable choice for a pack in. The other candidates are Super Thunder Blade and Space Harrier 2. None of them is great, though.

The dude getting jacked and turning into a wolfman is PRETTY COOL though

The game is awful but 'Rise from your grave' is an all timer of a sample that was always gonna grab the spotlight

TBF, it was really the most solid pick if you look at what games they had available to work with at the time. Ghouls’n Ghosts would’ve been ready in theory at that point (launched in Japan 11 days prior to the system coming out here), but I doubt Capcom would’ve signed off on it.

They needed something to shove the "this is arcade gaming at home" and whilst AB is a snooze fest it was one of those games that highlighted the shift that was coming (in the UK at least)
It also forced everyone to play AB to the point it is generally accepted that it's a bit... shite
