“Once you get troops on the streets, it’s only a matter of time before it goes bad. Some kid throws a stone, next minute there’s houses on fire and people getting killed.”

Night Watch, right now, is basically an entire manual on What Not To Do and they're doing all of it
it’s peterloo!
Well that has decided what audiobook is up next.
That said, Vimes pulled off a textbook example of deescalation that many police forces could learn from
part of that is because Ankh-Morpork subscribes to the old american tradition of mobs immediately throwing bricks and refuse at people who do What Not To Do
a tradition that current america seems to have forgotten
srsly though, "protests" in colonial america seem much more violence
Where's young Vetinari when you need him?
Yup but from over here it doesn't look like you folk have a Carrot or a Vimes...
And we can only hope there are a few Vimes in the right places...
I first read that book as the BLM protests were hitting their peak and let me tell you that was an experience in timing.
I've had the night watch audiobook on loop for like 8 months. honestly if I was doing the QOTD it would be nothing but that book right now.
Findthee Swing's view of "this is how people are, how do we deal with it?" vs "this is how people ought to be, how do we change them?"
Can we do the ginger beer trick on them? Except it's not a trick?
So much of what Pratchett wrote is happening today. More people need to read Discworld novels and learn what NOT to do!
the fact that i read that book in maybe 6th grade really does explain so much about my view of politics...
