Under authoritarianism (see: American white supremacy), the criminal act of any individual in the out-group is an act committed by all. When one of theirs commits crimes, it’s a one-off - barely worth mentioning - those who would criticize are mere opportunistic partisans scoring political points.

I listened to pbs while cooking tonight and if you were unfamiliar with Kirk (which I assume most people watching newshour/bbc would be) it was as if all Kirk ever did was “motivate young people to vote.” Complete lack of acknowledgment of anything he said/stood for
