Student A says/does something horrible but legal Student B calls for punishment against Student A

My position: Student B is not suppressing free speech A state university can have a code of conduct that covers Student A's legal actions and dole out punishment accordingly

  1. I agree with your take on Student B and one of my criticisms of FIRE is that I believe in its rhetorical efforts (not its legal ones) it blurs that point.

    Your point about A is simply wrong. A state university is bound by the First Amendment in punishing students for speech.
