I think this is a great point and one that is nearly fully generalizable to any facet of life - facility with religion, or history, or politics, or MATH even, is much less about knowing a particular fact and much more about navigating the world without getting brainwashed
If you possess a basic facility in any area, you can figure out so much as you go, but if you don't, you're much more susceptible to magical thinking
