A libertarian philosopher I debated with in a forum for many years said "follow the money". He genuinely seemed to believe that all research funding is paid personally to the scientists and they become rich.

My dad's a denier and he thinks it's a ruse to get taxpayer funds for unscrupulous companies, and it's a hair shirt protestant thing about excess.

I believe there are two distinct groups:
those who make most $$$ from all aspects of the fossil fuel industry including govt funded CCS & are happy to promote the idea of a hoax &
those who are most disposed to believe in grassy knolls, fake Moon landings, Elvis lives or the earth is flat

This is my question about most conspiracy theories- in terms of those that will destroy the planet it’s inconceivable that anyone thinks they’ll gain an advantage…

There’s all sorts of variations: it’s a cover for an anti capitalist agenda, it’s used to justify mass migration for population control, it’s used so we can’t benefit from oil wealth that would enrich X country vs Y, etc

The least insane think that vested interests in oil/gas/coal are behind the hoax, and that those parties stand to gain money. How they imagine that they themselves stand to gain is beyond me.

My in laws are climate change deniers. Their evidence? Their next door neighbour has kept an exercise book where he has written down temperatures for many years. He claims that the “official” figures are a lot higher than his exercise book. Their neighbour is, can I shock you, also an anti vaxxer.

I suspect that for a lot of people it is simply that they feel they might be inconvenienced in some way or have to change their habits slightly. Everything that follows is largely incoherent post-rationalisation.
