this is the thing and it's why Labour kept losing more and more and only "won" by default.

Exactly. Reminds me of the time I told my kid not to act like the bully just because the bully looks like he's winning - you'll never be able to be as bad as him - so he stopped trying and adopted his own way (cool and diplomatic and not hateful) and no surprises, he won in the end
