This is a pretty common charade from Kathleen Stock, Helen Joyce and the like. Gesturing towards "equal rights" to not be one of the Bad Guys and then stripping the term of any material meaning

Some cis people might think John Boyne's opinion sounds reasonable. He says that trans women's rights should come second to cis women's rights when they conflict.

The problem is the "conflict" with cis women's rights is that a small number of cis women hate trans women and don't want to see them.

  1. If the rights of the majority take precedent over the rights of a minority that minority have no rights. If rights don't protect persecuted minorities they are worthless. At the end of the day we are all part of a minority.

  2. Equal rights means protections from discrimination and economic precarity; Boyce et al. think it means theoretical access to a middle-class, professional life (despite kicking the ladder out that would let you get there)
