The average American car now costs $46k and the average payment is $742. Most Americans can’t afford a new car and can’t afford to repair an old one. The trade off works great if you are comfortable, but the working poor used to be able to keep cars running for relatively cheap.
The little maintenance things you used to do were easy and cheap. Now, you are much more likely to face a single catastrophically expensive repair that mechanically totals a car.
