domestic treaty

we lay down the sharp words first
then the dull ones
agree not to fire
into the air between us

we stack the dishes quietly
the fragile terms of surrender
fold the tablecloth over
to conceal the map of our stains

your hands rest open
at the border of mine
and we both know
any ceasefire worth keeping
is only paper
one breath away
from burning
