I think the UK needs to rejoin the EU fully for maximum economic benefit and to restore influence rather than merely 'reset' relations.
We haven't been told that we've been told not whilst prominent Brexiters are still around, Farage for instance. Opinion polls are meaningless in this situation.

I think the 'they' refers to the senior politicians and civil servants in individual countries as well as at the EU who would have to deal on a daily basis with a country where the two major parties are not minded to rejoin and where some 30% of voters are yet to be convinced to do so.
There is a clear join-process ... UK can start it and we are all happy when they, at the end, successful join the #EU! ๐ช๐บ๐

The problem is, we wouldn't get the same terms we had before Brexit. The EU will (quite understandably) play hardball.
It would be a huge mistake to let the UK rejoin. The minute they rejoin, the slow, chaotic and time-wasting march towards a second Brexit would start. A close and friendly relationship with a UK outside the EU is far better for Europe.
