The number of SUVs in London has increased tenfold in 20 years, prompting calls to curb their use.
They don't care. They don't care. The people driving SUVs don't care about anyone or anything outside of their vehicle. Their driving habits, attitudes and ability are all reflective of this. They will kill you, and blame you for your own death. They don't care.
Brit here. London is treated like a completely separate country. Has pavement parking bans, decent cycle infra, excellent transit options. The rest of Britain is appalling in comparison. London might actually upon this scourge, the rest of Britain won't due to no funding as usual.
Why would anyone buy an SUV?
Firstly it’s a status symbol. And secondly, the added mass provides an increased level of safety to the driver, to make up for all their deficiencies behind the wheel.
Both the above points come down to the primary factor, selfishness.
People buy a SUV because THEY can't drive, they're more protected in a collision. Love the old land rovers in rural areas, the new ones shouldn't be allowed in greater cities.
Call them by their proper name: ESVs
emotional support vehicles
there is nothing 'sport' or 'utility' about them.
Most of the SUVs I see in London are Range Rovers. The problem isn't just that they're large and people driving them have no idea about the boundaries of their vehicles, but many Range Rover drivers act like they own the road.
