Between 1879โ€“1918, the Carlisle Indian Industrial School was part of a U.S. policy to forcibly assimilate Native children, erasing their identity through abuse and separation. Of 10,000+ students, only 158 graduated. 500+ children died in such schools. #IndigenousHistory

  3. As a white kid from Idaho, I learned about that place from Jim Thorpe's biography. I doubt there was any other way I could have learned about it or any of the other abuses of Native American children, so not many of us knew and still don't.
