The biggest scandal in US public life ought to be that we are the richest country in history & yet our infrastructure sucks, our transportation choices suck, our cities suck, our healthcare sucks, our public administration sucks, & in dozens of little ways, our daily lives suck.
People return from other countries that are much poorer than the US and exclaim, "god, it sucks here!" You can't walk anywhere, cars dominate every square inch, there's very little public space or community, health care is a nightmare, child care is a nightmare, public education is mediocre.

The secret is not returning.

the parts of the USA that cost as much to live in as the expensive tourist areas of those other countries are pretty nice actually

And eating out food is terrible

People like us think that. I bet millions of people go to Europe, think it was nice to see the Mona Lisa and didn't mind the density, but like being back home where they can drive a big truck and fill it up w/ fairly cheap gas and be paid more for the same job than they would in France or Germany.

And Americans just accept it. All this money, all this wealth, and they accept grinding, day-to-day shit.
Just tapping the sign again, I guess:

Blue dot in AR and why I live here. Space, privacy, don't care if I am ever back in a major metropolitan. Politics suck but not as bad as big cities life. Really thoughtful posts today.. thx

I was so happy to get back to "poor" Poland after my last trip to the US and welcome back all the walking, cycling and trains...
Well, and vastly better food at 1/3 the price helped...

Also, more guns than people.

One word explains it all. And unlike what Gordon Gekko claimed, it is not good.
Greed.

Thinking about this as I stood in line for for over an hour at the pharmacy bc Walgreens has a virtual monopoly in SF then closed half its stores and understaffed the rest and is now rolling out vaccines via the same understaffed pharmacy bc the gov doesn’t, and it’s just “life”
