Unless there is a breakthrough on cellulosic ethanol or algae-based biofuels, there shouldn’t even be a discussion about whether they should play a role in our transportation future. Right now, it is nothing but a subsidy program for the ag community.
i did a fermi estimate of this a few months ago, energy of total US ethanol production, % of corn crop used for ethanol, number of acres dedicated to corn vs same area with solar
when i got the (correct) 2 orders of magnitude answer i had to recheck and redo everything because i couldnt believe it
electric cars will not save us.
And under the solar panels there can be much more biodiversity than in a corn field.
