So admire David Brooks writing in The Atlantic. His latest piece : "HOW THE IVY LEAGUE BROKE AMERICA" is masterful.
His recipe for a more equitable society is one Australia would do well to heed, given our walled-off private school system, the gutting of TAFE etc.

He identifies the "Diploma Divide": "High-school-educated people die eight years younger than college-educated people, on average. "There is a chasm dividing American society, and it is defined primarily by education levels. "I learned that this chasm didn’t just happen. It was created."

Yes indeed. And Brooks and Capehart's weekly analysis on PBS is a must watch, or must read if you prefer the transcript...

Haven't read it yet but heard him on a podcast. His point about AI making simply being able to pass exams irrelevant & instead including human skills like teamwork and communication is long overdue.
Plus deciding at age 18 who gets to succeed is objectively nuts (Switzerland decides at 12 🤯)

And that's why we need diversity; the fundamental criteria for any/every position should be Attitude, Apititude, Capability - nothing else matters.

Yup. His piece on the Diploma Divide was insightful. The impact of disinformation and post truth pollies is something we need to address, too.

Excellent article. Many points that are being reflected in Australian admissions systems but unfortunately ATAR is still king in many schools.

How the Ivy League Broke America
The meritocracy isn’t working. We need something new.

Yes! I read similar by David Brooks in the NYT. The focus on four year college degrees in the USA is weird. My experience living in the USA and working in the public gardens sector was for horticulturists- ie people working ’on the tools‘ most employers want college degrees!! And then pay peanuts

Yeah we need something to save us from V sinking

The Atlantic is ok again? The back list is near worth the value of a subscription and still seem to have first rate writers
