I think it's very good, but my basic argument was that it overemphasized the importance of institutional design and under-emphasized the importance of underlying social conflict in causing democratic backsliding.

My own commitment to institutions-first-ism has been weakening lately, appreciate the take; not sure if I entirely agree but I'm sure it matters it a lot what exactly the society-first approach entails. I've been thinking in what I'd call a 'politics-first' approach, but maybe it's society-first?
