This is no great insight, but actually one of the cardinal flaws in the Marxian tradition
The deep irony is the insistence that everything is class politics, despite the overwhelming evidence against such a thing, is proof that ideas have independent causal force. People read Marx and it broke their brains!

Been ages since I read that stuff, but didn't he talk about "false consciousness" too?

I mean, I suppose it depends on how you define "class"!

Marx claims he found Hegel's theory of history upside down, because it centered ideas, and put it right side up. But then Lenin had to turn it back around, for without the guidance of those versed in Marxism, the proletariat would not progress beyond mere "trade-union consciousness."
