No, really, economists and computer scientists (much to my chagrin) have a long history (ahem) of seeing a "problem" in another field, running in, grabbing the first thing that looks like a data source, quantifying it, applying sketchy analysis, and trumpeting the results.
Worth noting, this isn't an isolated occurrence. It's why deportation and deterrent policies, such as Labour's "one in one out policy in the UK" inevitably end up boosting smugglers. They ignore why people come to any particular country, and create a never ending cycle of people needing to re-enter.

One of our MPs in the U.K. said that the public had enough of experts.
He said this as a reason why we should ignore them and vote for Brexit.
It appears that we should have had a bit more confidence in experts after all.
