I get more than a little annoyed at those in the urbanists movement that assume nobody would earnestly desire to live in "The Suburbs™" and can't see the wedge they're driving between allies who actually would like bike lanes and trains and buses, but get written off as racist scared people.

Feels like we need some more words to describe the 'burbs, because there are very big differences between, say, the streetcar suburbs of the East and Midwest and the postwar freeway suburbs out West

  1. Yeah I grew up in what I thought of as a suburb of Boston, with a mix of SFH and triple-deckers and a commercial district within half a mile walking distance of pretty much everywhere. Wasn’t until much later I realized that’s not what people usually mean by “suburb”.
