    It took me 40 years to notice that in Star Wars you can recognize Luke's X-wing by the yellow stripes on its cannons.

  2. The origins of the saucer shape of UFOs is very easy to find, but where does the imagery of the beam of light (which usually transports people) from the bottom of the saucer originates? It's a very specific imagery, but I don't even know how to call it.

  3. Clippy was the foot in the door. Our tools shouldn't be anthropomorphic. Fictional characters are in a designated play area, but our tools are not. If they are anthropomorphic, how can people know they are just as fictional?

This suggests that "AI" is as much a cultural shift as it is a technological one—the hype-shrouded AI boom has given managers encouragement and cover to break previous norms and standards, even if it means a loss in quality. As the boom appears to give way to a bust, that may be all the clearer.

  5. Many translators fear and lament what will be lost as their work gets automated. Many were never in it for the money, but for love of the work—of translating games, prose and art. They worry AI-generated output stands to flatten and collapse culture itself, our very ability to understand each other.
