  1. you cant deter crime thru relentless force. the longer it’s applied, the more visible errors accrue & the more citizens feel occupied. distrust in authority dissolves cooperation and you can’t solve crimes without citizens’ help. when police are a community’s enemy solving crime there is impossible.

Plea for fellow reporters: can we stop reflexively referring to everyone the feds randomly arrest as “undocumented” or “in the country illegally?” We frankly have no idea who they’re detaining or what their status is most of the time, and there are many reports of people with status being detained
