Russia as a country is a historical response to Mongol and Tartar aggression that drove the squabbling Rus tribes to unite under a monarchy specifically to prevent their own colonization.

It seems to have left a permanent mark in the national psyche and is mirrored in their policies to this day.

It's why they believe in buffer zones and proxy war as a means of national security. Everyone just has to play defense because some psycho strongmen with potency problems who labor under the false assumption peace comes from the barrel of a gun.
